Miss Profe, You're talking about a 21st Century educational phenomenon...the idea that everyone makes the grade, succeeds, passes, gets challenged and makes the cut. (Ooops, sounds like I'm dissing NCLB!)

There's a country-western song out there -- can't recall the title -- that talks about not everyone succeeding, making the team, and all that. And the singer just says that, hey, that's the way it was. And there were no fatalities.

If we try to create success for students who don't necessarily hunger for it, what are we...enablers?

I'm glad you asked the question. We need to look square at it.

I do think the process starts here; I was visiting with a former student who told me that he had to kick a student out of his group for not wanting to participate and do his part. I agreed and said you made the best choice. What was his reward? He was seen as the bad guy by the rest of his peers which made it difficult for him to work with new people later.

Hi, Carson.

No; I don't think so. It was me and another member of the department, and, between you, me and a goal post, she did not pick up on the comment.

Ay, caramba.

So, did the European female's foot hurt her chances as a candidate? I had a candidate tell me a year ago that he thought the Cold War was a joke. God will end the world. Oh, he graduated high school in '83, a bit too old. I was not too crazy about his Cold War belief, esp. as a history teacher.

I once heard a candidate say that Affirmative Action was the cause for the demise of college standards. Let us say that he offended all in the room.

I think it is of great importance that the absentee policy is set right from day 1 of the school year. There should be a designated sopt where students can look at the homework assignments that were missed. I also feel that telling them what is expected isn't enough. We must model the behavior we want them to do. If the teacher is absent for a day there should be a folder that the students can put messages in for you and that they can see you check that folder upon your return.

Only a few weeks left before summer. Then, you will be able to shift your focus from the everyday matters of classes to other matters. That is my thinking. To combat what you are saying, I think that I am going to start getting up much earlier, read a few pages out of a book over a cup of coffee, and try to reflect more. I am letting time get away because I fail to do this. Good luck from your friend in Houston.
