It’s A Hardknock Teacher’s Life
A ToC trying to keep it real, in spite of the odds.

Good and Not So Good

March 31, 2008

Today I learned that the couple who lived across the hall from me was moving.  I learned this when I came home for a bit since I have no use of my classroom for two consecutive blocks, and the Language Office and the Media Center are not the most desireable localities for doing work. The [...]

Yet Another Example of College Campus Blackface

March 28, 2008

The latest is from North Dakota State University.
My question: Why would Black students want to attend a school where they constitute 1.5 percent of the student body?
Then again, I give them mad props for seeking a higher education under those conditions.

A Familiar Story

March 26, 2008

Being an independent school teacher who is very familiar with Punahou School, this news story about Senator Barack Obama piqued my interest.  It tells a familiar tale: underprivileged students of color trying to fit in to a White, highly privileged educational enclave.  The story is as relevant now as it was when Senator Obama experienced [...]

Does This Bother You?

March 25, 2008

This website is causing quite a row.  The name itself is a turn-off for me. Moreover, why would a girl want to play it? Are girls that bored? What’s even sadder is that there are girls who say the game is “harmless”, and its 23 year-old designer says it’s not a bad influence. Hmmm.

I’ve Reclaimed My Blog’s Former Name

March 24, 2008

There’s nobody else using Hardknock as a blog name - in as far as I am aware. Furthermore, I like it much better.
So, there it is.

Civility Footprint?

March 23, 2008

Happy Easter, everyone!
Not much in the mood for writing today.  However, I did want to post something fitting with the holiday, and found this.
There are related links to a book and an activity that you can do.  I am contemplating reading the article doing the activity with my advisory group this week.
I hope you read [...]

Chris Wallace Calls Out His Peeps

March 22, 2008

I give mad props to Chris Wallace for stepping up to his Fox colleagues.

Who Is At Risk?

March 21, 2008

We don’t usually associate White, upper middle class students attending expensive independent schools with being at-risk.  To the contrary: They are the privileged ones leading charmed lives in comparison to many of their Black and Latino counterparts. Yet, having worked at independent schools my entire career, I have seen more than my share of this [...]

Foldables?

March 19, 2008

Foldables seem to be the latest gadget in learning.  Check out these foldables by
Miss Teacha’s students.
I was then prompted to do some research, and found this and this.
I then contemplated how I might use foldables with my students.
With respect to teaching the range, I suppose that foldables would appeal to the kinesthetic learner.  But, [...]

Care

March 19, 2008

I haven’t spoken about my Dear Dad in some time.  So, here is an update.
Dad had his second post-surgery follow-up on last Tuesday.  The doctor has given him clearance to drive around town.  So, he can get to his physical therapy appointments, if he is inclined to drive himself.  Which leads me to the second [...]
