True Patriots

February 29, 2008

I needed something to uplift my spirits this morning.  Then, as I waited at the counter of my neighborhood D2 for my plain bagel, toasted, with butter, and a small hot chocolate, I saw a man, African American, in full dress uniform.  He was military - U.S. Army to be exact. And, he had rank, [...]

Starbucks Goes Back to School

February 27, 2008

The three hour closing of many Starbucks stores across the country on Tuesday caught my attention - somewhat.  I am not a big coffee drinker, although I do enjoy a cup or two over breakfast when visiting my parents, or during my weekend bagel run.  Between you, me and a goal post, D2 is [...]

Gratitude

February 26, 2008

8pm is way too late to be arriving home from school.  Especially given that the day didn’t begin too promisingly for me.  I really did not want to leave the comforts of my apartment this morning; I felt absolutely, positively “Blah.” Not only was I fighting something, but I also was thoroughly exhausted from my [...]

Student Accountability

February 26, 2008

What builds accountability in our students?
Case in point:  I teach eighth graders, and when they are absent, they are to follow up with each of their teachers in order to find out what their assignments are.  While such practice is reasonable for eighth graders, how do we teach them accountability?  We don’t tell students in [...]

I really didn’t feel like it…

February 22, 2008

…but I returned to campus on Thursday evening to see the dress rehearsal of the middle school play.
I continued to feel exhausted, and wanted nothing more than to remain in my nice, warm apartment.  In fact, on a good day I have no desire to return to campus once I have left. My dilemma: Wanting to [...]

Happy Face

February 20, 2008

I was so glad to get home today it wasn’t even funny.
I did not go to school yesterday: Feeling very run-down by early days and late evenings spent with my Dad at the nursing facility. After having worn the “happy face” at school since February 7th, I had given up the fight, and decided to [...]

It Doesn’t Feel Like Valentine’s Day

February 14, 2008

I just wasn’t feeling Valentine’s Day today.  So, instead of red, I wore brown: A brown top with a brown plaid skirt. They looked better with my Wellie boots, anyway. Perhaps it is because my Dad is at the rehabilitation center; I am still feeling rather stressed and anxious.
Speaking of Dad, his X-rays and [...]

Moving Forward

February 11, 2008

Dad was moved to a nursing facility on yesterday morning to begin his post-op rehabilitation.  He’s in a very nice facility, near home, and highly recommended by his doc.
My mother and brother have visited Dad at the facility.  I didn’t go yesterday.  Mom and Dear Brother felt that I needed to go home and rest, [...]

Exhausted

February 8, 2008

I have spent the last two days at the hospital.  And, I am exhausted.
My father had major surgery on Thursday morning: A full hip replacement.  He’s in pain, but it is nothing like the pain from which he suffered before the surgery.  He’s in very good spirits, and is making very good progress along the [...]

Yes…

February 5, 2008

…I voted.
In fact, I cannot imagine not having done so today.
Too many folks paid big, and many with their lives. So, for one to ask me if I voted today lacks the necessary historical perspective.
BTW: I was born the year the Voting Rights Act was passed.
