Reading This Will Make You Sick
Since the school year has come to a close, there will be no stories from the trenches to share. However, I do wish to continue to educate. So, here is an article which appeared in Colorlines. It may change the way you think about moo juice.

thanks for this. My dad drinks enough milk to keep the industry in business himself, I will have to point him to this article!

I don’t know how much of this article is untrue, but I know that milk is pasteurized -as dictated by law- so the statement that “The supposedly hip milk mustache is actually a creamy layer of mucus, live bacteria, and pus.” is false and intentionally, disgustingly, graphic. I suspect the person who wrote this article has a hidden agenda of some sort. For most people the benefits of dairy products (in limited quantities) outweigh the ‘dangers’, but I’m sure it’s possible to eat a healthy diet without dairy if one chooses to. It may take a little effort to get enough vitamin D and calcium.

Karrie, the agenda is, and it isn’t hidden: Black and brown folks need to stay away from milk and dairy products. Not only that, many individuals of the the majority population are not embracing dairy products. The author makes these points very clearly and overtly in her article. Additionally, I began to learn re: the negative effects re: milk back in 1987 when I was in my 20s. I met a nutritionist who told me that if I eliminated all dairy products from my diet, I would no longer experience severe menstrual pain and cramps. I did not listen to her. Many years later, after discovering that I have IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and gallstones, I have stopped consuming dairy. Not only have I lost weight, but also my overall health has improved significantly. And, you are correct:one can obtain calcium from many plant-based foods. Dairy is not as vital to one’s health as we have been led to believe.
BTW: I recently conducted an Internet surf re:cheese. The information I collected is almost as bad as that re: milk.

please don’t talk about cheese! I love cheese! I need cheese!
There are two good soy based cheeses (taste like cheese, melt kind of like cheese, good on sandwiches and pizza but not nachos) that I found while living on the West Coast but they do not seem to be readily available elsewhere in the U.S. If I remember the brand I will post them.
good sources of calcium I know of:
broccoli
kale (love it!)
green leafy
calcium & D infused:
most commercial cereal
some brands of commercial OJ
Good supplement:
Viactive - tastes like candy, limited calories, and its a vitamin!
Do you know of others missprofe? what about fruits?
profbwoman - June 26, 2007 at 3:11 am
Yes, I do. Fruits: oranges, prunes, dates, figs.
Thank you, profbw, for the list of foods rich in calcium, and for the calcium supplement recommendation.
Re: Soy cheese. A rec. for a good one will be greatly appreciated.

My favorite soy cheeses are Vegan Gourmet (especially the mozzarella flavor) for sandwiches and VeganRella for mac and cheese. Vegan Gourmet Mozzarella is soooo good with tomatoes and basil! Melting VeganRella takes a little patience and I usually add some water or soymilk when making mac and cheese, but it melts easily by itself when I make grilled cheese sandwiches in my hand-me-down George Forman grill.
