To What End?

February 27, 2007

Why do we teach what we teach? What purpose does it serve? How do we transmit the value of our discipline to our students?
I was prompted to contemplate these questions by a recent post by my colleague entitled, “Where is There?”, and my comments to the same. I often wonder to what end [...]

It’s Not Over…

February 27, 2007

Some time back, I posted that I was going to stick with the dark theme. However, I spoke too soon; I’m still playing around with themes.
The one you see is the newest wordpress.com theme. It is called, “Misty Look.”
Actually, I’m rather feeling this. Especially when combined with the custom header.

We’re Not Feelin’ You, Miss Profe

February 25, 2007

For the definition of feel as it is used in the title, click here.
For the first time in my 13 years as a TOC in independent schools, I have encountered a perplexing dilemma: Some of my students confuse me with other teachers. That is to say, they’ll look me dead in the face, and [...]

You Just Can’t Make This Stuff Up #5

February 24, 2007

This past Wednesday was my first day back teaching my Spanish 2 students following my illness. During my afternoon Spanish 2 class, the students were engaged in an oral pair activity. However, after a few minutes, many of the pair groups had completed the assignment, and had begun to chat quietly amongst themselves about this, [...]

The Same Old Same Old

February 19, 2007

I’ve been interested in the integration of second language teaching and learning and ICT into for about two years now. In fact, each June, a local independent school offers a series of tedech workshops for teachers of humanities, science, math and languages. So, last spring, I enrolled. Or, at least, I thought that I had [...]

I’ve Been Tagged Yet Again!

February 18, 2007

Silvia Tolisano tagged me for her meme, “My Connected Global Day”. Please stop over and read hers when you catch a minute. She has fully integrated tech globally into her professional and personal lives. By comparison, my day is very connected, but often not as global as I would like.
Generally, [...]

El Regreso

February 18, 2007

Given my recent internal debate re: the light on dark layout of my original theme, I turned to Google, and conducted a search. My search was inspired by mscofino.Unfortunately, there wasn’t much out there, but I did find this lively blog debate on the topic .That being said, I have returned to my [...]

Separation of Professional and Personal Space?

February 17, 2007

Last evening, I contemplated the merits of maintaining two separate blogs: A professional edublog, and a second, more personal blog. Especially given my recent illness, I wasn’t sure if visitors, both new and returning, desired to read about my struggles on a blog which professed to be about teaching and learning.
But, at what point don’t [...]

An Even Higher Calling?

February 16, 2007

I had a stressful and unpleasant interaction on the telephone with my primary care doctor on Thursday. The issue? Actually, there are three: Lack of recognition, concern and respect. When a patient phones her doctor on the Emergency Line at 4:50 am on a Sunday morning, she expects her doctor to: a). Return the call, [...]

Belated Valentines

February 16, 2007

Several colleagues from my workplace phoned me at my parents’ home (which is where I have been staying since my ER odyssey on Sunday) on Thursday afternoon, including the Assistant to the Head of School, the Division Head, and the Head of Dept. for Languages. Although I was not really up for much phone [...]
